Carthage, IL – Among the bills piling up on the Illinois governor's desk is one which could save some money for Carthage.
Mayor Jim Nightingale says an energy bill which has passed the House and Senate is still waiting to be signed.
He says the bill would eliminate the $250 per light fee now charged when the city replaces a street light with one of a different size.
Nightingale says once the bill is signed, the fee would be eliminated.
He says the city has spent several months determining where a street light could be replaced with one of a lower wattage.
City crews and representatives of Ameren Illinois have done the study.
He says projections are that the city could save between $400 and $700 a month by using lower-wattage bulbs wherever possible.
Nightingale says the street lights in some locations will be kept at maximum brightness as a safety measure.
He says when the bill is signed, crews will begin the process of replacing some of the bulbs.
