Fort Madison, IA – The Fort Madison City Council will work short-handed for the next few months.
At-Large Alderman Greg Smith's last meeting was this week.
The council interviewed three candidates who expressed an interest in filling the vacancy created by Smith's departure, but chose not to fill the seat.
City Manager Larry Dinwiddie says the council did not want to give someone a leg up in retaining the seat, with city elections just over two months away, by appointing them for just a handful of meetings.
Candidates have until September 20 to fill out the required paperwork to be on the ballot in November.
Additional Information
* Smith is leaving the council after roughly 19 months in office due to work obligations.
* He was appointed to replace Steve Ireland on the city council following Ireland being elected Mayor of Fort Madison.
* Dinwiddie says an appointment would have been made if the election was a year or so away.
