Mt. Sterling, IL – Problems with farmland assessment mean the Brown County school district will not get its property tax money until next year.
Superintendent Merle Kenday says the tax bills will probably not go out until December and payments will not be due until January.
He will present his budget for the current year to the school board in September, but will not know how much local money will be forthcoming.
No state aid payments have been received, so he has been doing interfund loans to get the school year started and meet payroll.
Kenneday says he's also arranged a line of credit good through December with local banks.
He says now that the state budget has been signed, he's been told the first aid payment will be based on last year's figures until the foundation level is established.
Brown County was one of the last to get the state-required geographic information systems for its assessment office. That has delayed the local tax process from placing values on land through the board of review which hears appeals.
