Carthage, IL – Carthage will hire a tree firm to remove around 15 large trees from the back side off the city's dam.
Mayor Jim Nightingale says there's been some seepage near the top of the dam.
He says consultants believe roots from at least one tree have sought water. That's where the seepage occurred.
He says the seepage has stopped for the moment because the lake level is about 18 inches below the full level.
He says the tree firm will be asked to remove the biggest trees. City crews will remove small trees and brush.
Nightingale says when the lake was dredged in 1982, the lake-bottom material was used to build up the back side of the dam. The trees have grown up since then.
