Fort Madison, IA – A soon-to-be empty library in Fort Madison will have a new purpose.
The Cattermole Memorial Library has been in use for more than 110 years.
It will be closed, though, when Fort Madison's new public library opens its doors.
Instead of leaving the building vacant, the city council has created the Cattermole Cultural Center Commission to oversee the property.
Commissioner John Wright says the building will showcase Fort Madison's history.
He says the goal is to have the Cattermole Cultural Center filled with permenent and temporary displays including music, photographs, letters, and artwork.
Wright says the next step is to formally organize the nine-member commission.
He says the center could be open in about one year.
