Keokuk, IA – Keokuk is ready to start the design work for a new municipal swimming pool.
After meeting with representatives of Kansas City-based Larkin Aquatics for more than an hour, the city council says it wants to move ahead with the project.
Finance Committee Chairman Doug Matlick believes the council will formally approve the hiring of Larkin for design, consulting, and engineering work at next week's meeting.
Larkin will charge the city $10,000 to $12,000 for preliminary design work.
When the pool is built, the firm will get 10% of the cost of the project.
In 2002, the firm designed a new aquatics complex for Keokuk, but that project did not move forward.
The new pool could be open as soon as spring of 2009.

* Matlick says the city may have several million dollars to contribute to the project through a TIF fund.
