Fort Madison, IA – The design stage for the Highway 61 Bypass around Fort Madison is nearly complete.
Engineer Larry Jackson says, at this point, the bypass will begin where Highways 61 and 2 intersect, run northeast and then east before it reconnects to Highway 61 northeast of Fort Madison.
He says the public can still comment on the design for a few more days.
Once the final comments are reviewed and any changes are made, Jackson says the design will be approved and the project can move ahead.
If all goes well, Jackson says the roughly $100,000,000 project could be open to traffic by the end of 2011.
Additional Information
* Jackson says right-of-way will be purchased in 2008, culvert work and grading in 2009 and 2010, and paving in 2011.
* There will be four interchanges to enter or exit the bypass.
* A fifth could be added if money is found for a J-40 (Highway 103) interchange.
