Bushnell, IL – Bushnell aldermen might take a more aggressive approach to removing a red coloration from the city's water.
Some residents have complained about red coloration in the water that comes from old water mains.
Mayor Steve Russell says the city has been working toward using a series of state grants to allow it to replace the 66 blocks of old main. However, he says that would take several years.
Instead, the council is investigating issuing about $1.75 million in bonds to replace the mains all at once.
He says this would allow the city to hold its utility reserve funds to handle possible problems with sewer lines.

Russell says some of the sewer lines are old and in danger of collapsing.
He says some of the lines have been scanned with a video camera. Others will be scanned for possible problems when the council decides where it will come up with the approximately $50,000 cost.
The city has been trying an experimental chemical for about one year which is supposed to remove the red coloration from the water. It has been only partly successful. Some residents are still getting the red color.
