Carthage, IL – The Carthage after-school program will be housed in the elementary school building to avoid the need for transporting its pupils.
Elementary district Superintendent Vicki Hardy says there will be no cost to the district.
She says the program runs from the close of classes until about 5:30 with a certified teacher on hand to help pupils with homework. Participants also have supervised play, snacks and other activities.
Hardy says more educational components will be added to the fledgling program as the year progresses.
The program is run by the Carthage Family Fitness Center, formerly the YMCA.
It operated a similar program during the summer in its own building.
Moving the program to the elementary school eliminates problems with transportation.
Hardy says the program now has about five regular students, with others that come in when they're not involved in after-school activities.
