Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk School Board has issued a counter-offer to a firm interested in the land where the district's old middle school once stood.
Twin Rivers Storage has offered the district $350,000 for the roughly 3 acres of land along Keokuk's Main Street.
Spokesman Jeff Hendrickson says the land would be developed for retail use, though he could not identify potential businesses during last night's board meeting.
The school board voted to counter the offer with a request for $500,000.
The district spent around $300,000 to tear the old school down.
The price tag for the vacant lot was set at roughly $850,000 in late 2004.
The price dropped to $750,000 in 2006 and again to $550,000 earlier this year.
Several board members said the district should take the $350,000 and use the money for infrastructure improvements.
