Keokuk, IA – The property along Keokuk's Main Street that was covered by a large white tent for several months is now ready for development.
Environmental Supervisor Warren Mueller says Ameren UE removed about 24,000 tons of soil from the site of an old manufactured gas plant.
He says the process removed contaminants 5 - 30 feet below ground, so above-ground commercial construction can now take place.
Mueller says the land should remain commercially-zoned, the streets should stay where they are, and residents should not dig private wells in that area.
He says those restrictions are recommended because the contaminants from the plant have had 75 - 150 years to spread through the ground.
