Fort Madison, IA – It remains unclear how much money could be trimmed from the Fort Madison Fire Department's budget for next year.
The idea of restructuring the department, through volunteers or cross-training police officers, has been discussed for months as a way to save money during tough financial times.
No definitive answers, though, came out of the most recent meeting on the topic.
Mayor Steve Ireland says the city council favors trimming the Fort Madison Fire Department's $1,400,000 budget by $200,000-$300,000.
Ireland plans to meet with Fire Chief Joey Herren and City Manager Larry Dinwiddie to review the department's budget and find potential places to cut.
