Code Violations At Fort Madison Middle School

Fort Madison, IA – The Fort Madison School District must address several fire and safety issues at its middle school.

The Fort Madison Fire Department inspects the district's buildings each year.

Fire Chief Joey Herrin says the recent walk-throughs resulted in only one major issue.

He says there were more than 50 students using the band-room at Fort Madison Middle School, which violates building and fire codes.

Herrin says emergency and exit lights must also be added in several rooms at the middle school.

He is working with the state and the district on possible solutions for the occupancy level in the band room.

They include using another room for the class, adding a temporary structure, or building a fire-escape.
