Nauvoo, IL – Nauvoo aldermen are trying to find a new tax so they can limit tax impact on the town's permanent residents.
Mayor John McCarty says the city held a Truth in Taxation hearing becuse the proposed levy was more than five percent over last year's.
He says they then decided to investigate their Home Rule powers to see if there was a tax that would affect visitors more than permanent residents.
He says the need for money to maintain things such as streets or the police force continues to grow. However, revenue has not.
In addition, the council is increasing its support of the public library to assure that it meets the requirements for state grants.

The proposed levy is $157,000, including the five percent increase allowed by Truth in Taxation requirements.
The mayor and council plan to bring suggestions to the next city council meeting.
