Keokuk, IA – Demolition work is now underway on the Main Cafe in downtown Keokuk.
Community Development Director Pam Broomhall says the building, located at the corner of 7th and Main, must come down because it is rapidly deteriorating.
In fact, it has reached the point that the demolition must now extend to the abandoned building next door because of a shared wall.
Broomhall says the demoliton of the Main Cafe must also be handled as if the property has asbestos, which slows down the process.
She says the price tag could be $100,000, though the city is looking for money from the owner to help off-set the cost.
Broomhall says the project should take about one month to complete.
