Colchester, IL – The West Prairie school board has approved a $3.1 million tax levy for the coming year.
Superintendent Jonathan Heerboth says the request is a bit more than five percent above the current year's levy.
However, the effect on the district's tax rate cannot yet be estimated. He says the value of the property in the district is increasing, but no one knows yet by just how much.
He expects information from the county assessor's office that will indicate which types of property became more or less valuable.
A change in the way farmland is assessed is changing the value of rural property. Some types are becoming more valuable, and some types less.
He says the tax rates will fall for some funds, such as Social Security or the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

Heerboth says the district is still being paid state aid at last year's levels until the legislature approves an implementation bill.
He says this is still bringing the district a little more money than last year.
