Fort Madison, IA – The Great River Regional Waste Authority borrowed roughly four million dollars for its current landfill expansion.
The organization now hopes to avoid that type of debt the next time around.
Chairman Bob Woodruff says, starting in January, the waste authority will set aside $15,000 per month.
He says after 15 years, the savings plan could result in more than $3,500,000 being available for future expansion.
Woodruff says the waste authority would also save money because the interest on a $3,500,000 loan would be around $1,500,000.
He says a contractor has been hired for the second phase of the current landfill expansion.
Work will proceed as weather permits.
