Lee County Picks New Chairman

Fort Madison, IA – The Lee County Board of Supervisors went against recent history in selecting its chairman for 2008.

The panel's previous Vice-Chairmen, George Morgan in 2005 and Larry Kruse in 2006, assumed the top spot the very next year.

That pattern changed this year, though, as 2007 Vice Chairman Bob Woodruff turned down the post by nominating Morgan to again serve as Chairman.

Woodruff says he did not want to serve another term as Chairman because he has held the post on two seperate occasions, prior to the board expanding from three to five members.

Morgan says some of his goals as chairman are to reduce property taxes and to bring in more economic development opportunities.

Kruse was elected Vice Chairman for 2008.

Meanwhile, two members of the Lee County Board of Supervisors say they will not seek another term in office.

Democrat Bob Woodruff says this will be the last year he represents District Four, which includes Keokuk's west side as well as Montrose.

2008 will mark Woodruff's sixth year as a Lee County Supervisor.

Following Woodruff's announcement, Democrat George Morgan said 2008 would be his final year representing District Five, which includes Keokuk's East Side.

Morgan has served on the board since 2005.

Both men say it is time to move on and wanted to give potential candidates enough time to run.

The primary is slated for June.
