Keokuk, IA – A veteran Southeast Iowa lawmaker is ready to call it a career after more than two decades in Des Moines.
Representative Phil Wise (D-Keokuk) was first elected in 1986 and has served eleven consecutive terms.
He says the idea of retiring from politics has been on his mind for the last year, even though his party controls the Iowa House, Senate, and Governor's Office.
Wise wants to go out on top so he can prepare for his life after the Iowa Legislature.
Wise says he will continue his consulting business, which has him involved in federal energy and educational issues.
He is proud of his past work in turning around the economy of Southeast Iowa.
Wise says he will spend his final few months in the Iowa Legislature working on health care, education, and economic development issues.
