Keokuk, IA – A move to improve safety at the Keokuk Municipal Airport appears to be working.
Airport Manager Greg Gobble says the final pieces of a perimeter fence could be installed within the next few weeks.
He says the nearly 5 1/2 mile chain-link fence, which features barb-wire along the top, is designed to keep deer and other wildlife from running in front of airplanes.
Gobble says that as gaps in the fence have been closed, airport personnel has not noticed any deer on the property.
Construction got underway last year.
Gobble says the lobbying effort to bring in money for the project got underway much earlier than that.
He says the perimeter fence and some taxi-lane repairs, which should also be wrapped up in a matter of weeks, cost more than $1,000,000.
The federal government picked up most of the tab for the two projects.
