Lee County Breaks Ground On Jail Expansion/Renovation

Montrose, IA – Lee County broke ground, last night, on the expansion and renovation of its jail.

The man in charge of the facility says the upgrade has been needed for years.

Sheriff Buck Jones says that when it was built, more than 30 years ago, the Lee County Correctional Center was top-of-the-line.

That is no longer the case.

Jones says one of the biggest concerns with the jail, in its current condition, is employee safety.

Jones says the $6,000,000 expansion and renovation will eliminate blind spots, increase capacity to nearly 100 beds, and expand inmate classification opportunities.

More than 50 people turned out for the ground-breaking.

The project will take about two years to complete.

*Additional Information*
- Voters overwhelmingly approved the jail bond referendum.
- Jones says the temporary housing trailers should be moved out in the next few weeks.
