Hamilton, IL – Residents of one Hancock County community could soon have a new option for getting around town.
The Hamilton City Council has approved the first reading of a measure that would temporarily legalize the use of golf carts on city streets.
The vehicles would need to be able to travel 20-25 mph, have working brakes and turn signals, and include a headlight.
Health and Safety Committee Chair, Debbie Summers, says residents want the option of riding golf carts in town.
She says some residents have already tried to use them in Hamilton because of high gas prices.
The 6 month trial period could be extended with city council approval.
Issues such as seat belts and child restraints must still be worked out before the golf cart measure can be finalized.
