Governor Says Infrastructure Money = Jobs

Washington, DC – Iowa's Governor says thousands of jobs could be created in his state if Congress approves an infrastructure-based economic stimulus package. Democrat Chet Culver says Iowa is ready if the funding comes through.

He says there are roughly $150,000,000 worth of road and bridge projects that are ready for construction in 20 counties. He says 6,000 jobs could be created immediately with more coming in construction-related industries.

Culver says that while the infrastructure funding would not directly benefit each Iowan, the money would provide a boost to many families throughout the state.

He says it is important, though, that any economic stimulus plan include funding for rail service and for improvements in wind-energy storage and distribution.

Governor Culver made his comments following a meeting with President Elect Barack Obama. He says it was the first time a President-Elect spoke about the transition period with the members of the National Governors Association.
