Keokuk, IA – Keokuk took a different approach to its citywide clean-up program this fall.
As it turns out, the change appears to have paid off.
The city offered every household two vouchers for use during the months of October and November. Each voucher allowed for one free trip to the landfill.
Code Enforcement Officer Kathie Mahoney says the cost was down, compared to previous citywide clean-up efforts, even with the city paying the dumping fees associated with each used voucher. "This last project cost $6,127, which is about a $3,500 savings and we dumped more tonage."
More than 600 vouchers were used this time around.
In the past, residents had to bring their items to the swimming pool during a designated weekend. The city then hired a company to haul the material to the landfill.
The city could hold as many as three citywide clean-ups next year.
