Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk City Council has accepted the nearly $195,000 bid from Gaylord Construction Company of Fort Madison.
The stone and concrete wall in Victory Park extends several feet above the nearby parking lot and stretches from the Mississippi River Bridge to the George M. Verity Riverboat Museum.
The plan calls for the construction of large, evenly spaced, pillars with a 6" pipe running through the tops of them.
The city council decided against building a large stone wall. The panel's reasoning included a higher price tag and the likelihood that the wall would impact views of the Mississippi River.
The city received six bids for the project from firms in Keokuk, Fort Madison, and Hamilton.
Keokuk received $500,000 from FEMA for the project.
Public Works Director Gerald Moughler will ask for permission to use the remaining money to repair the parking lot in Victory Park. Several council members would like to see the money used to extend the new wall to the north.
