Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk City Council has given the go-ahead for city staff to start the process of extending the time limit for parking along Main Street. Motorists would have two hours, instead of one, to park between 2nd and 12th Streets during regular business hours.
The change would likely be made in the Community Development Office, as opposed to moving an ordinance through the Code Revision Sub-Committee.
The Keokuk City Council also wants to erect one sign, per block, noting the time limit. The panel wants to make sure, though, that the signs match the feeling of the downtown and possibly into the city-wide branding effort.
Police Chief Tom Crew says that is needed to help with enforcement. He says, "It is always better if it is posted so an individual gets out and sees that they can only be there an hour or two hours. That allows them to be visually notified of our city ordinance."
6th Ward Alderwoman Karole Smith raised concerns about limited parking for business owners. The discussion came about, during last night's workshop, after a business owner expressed concerns about a lack of Main Street parking for his customers.
It's unclear when the time limit for parking will be officially extended.
