Keokuk To Seek New Bids For Parking Lot

Keokuk, IA – Crews removed the top layers of the parking lot in front of the Keokuk Police Department several weeks ago. It was discovered, during that process, that the subterranean base was damaged and would need to be repaired.

The contractor, Myers Driveway and Septic Service, told the city the additional work means the lot should be rebuilt with concrete, as opposed to asphalt.

The project cost was to jump from $40,000 to $80,000.

Glen Myers of Myers Driveway and Septic Service told the city council, last week, that some money could be saved because the project was designed to Iowa Department of Transportation standards. He told the panel he would work with the city's public works department on reducing the cost.

Mayor Tom Marion says he had not heard from Myers since Myers spoke to the city council.

Based on that discussion, members of the Keokuk City Council told Marion to start working with local contractors on new specifications and new bids for the project.

The mayor says the bids should come in at least 25% lower by reducing the thickness of the lot from 8" to 6" and moving to concrete.

Marion hopes to have new bids before the Keokuk City Council as early as Thursday, August 19. Keokuk owes Myers Driveway and Septic Service about $12,000 for the work already completed.

Police Chief Tom Crew says the torn-out parking lot is allowing rainwater to flow directly into the basement of his headquarters.
