Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk School Board voted 5-0 to suspend high school girls basketball coach Mike Davis for two weeks without pay.
Davis had been on paid administrative leave for more than 6 months. Superintendent Lora Wolff had recommended that Davis be fired.
Mike Steinkruger took part in the four-hour termination hearing that wrapped up in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 12. He abstained from the public vote, though, and promptly resigned from the Keokuk School Board.
Steinkruger says board decisions should not be based on personal biases or agendas.
"We need to look at decisions that look at good policy, good human resource policy and outcome," said Steinkruger, "and not necessarily make decisions that are based on the welfare of the sports program only."
Steinkruger would not elaborate on that, citing the private nature of the hearing. He believes more of a consensus could have been reached prior to the recent vote.
Steinkruger says that he felt he was not being effective. He added that he did not want to deter from the effectiveness of the Keokuk School Board.
Steinkruger served on the Keokuk School Board for about 11 months.
Meanwhile, the panel has not provided information as to why Davis was placed on leave, why he was suspended and not fired, and what the accusations against Davis were.
