Keokuk
More people took part in Keokuk's second annual city-wide recycling event.
There were 322 participants this year. That's a roughly 33% increase compared to 2009.
A majority of the participants were from Keokuk.
The committee that organized the event says 6,000 lbs of paper, 450 lbs of general recycling, and 76 appliances were dropped off. 1,200 lbs of hazardous materials were also collected.
Keokuk
Keokuk's recent city-wide clean-up resulted in nearly 100 tons of material heading to the landfill.
The clean-up ran from July 19th - August 14th. During that time, the city distributed more than 1,000 vouchers.
Code Enforcement Officer Kathy Mahoney says 430 were redeemed, totaling more than 94 tons of material.
The clean-up was scheduled for the fall, but the Keokuk City Council changed the dates to help victims of this summer's flooding and sewer back-ups.
Fort Madison
A Fort Madison attorney is Iowa's newest District Court Judge.
Governor Chet Culver has selected John Wright to serve in the 8B Judicial District.
Wright is a private practice attorney with experience as a prosecutor. He is also a former mayor of Fort Madison.
Wright replaces District Judge William Dowell, who retired after 20 years on the bench.
The 8B Judicial District covers Lee, Des Moines, Henry, and Louisa Counties.
Lee County
Lee County residents will have plenty of opportunities to get a flu shot this fall.
The county health department has scheduled 14 vaccination clinics, throughout the county, over the next five weeks.
The flu vaccine costs $20.
The 2010 - 2011 vaccine provides protection from three viruses, including H1N1.
