Macomb, IL – The investigation into the trailer fire in Macomb's Shade Tree Village has concluded.
Macomb Fire Chief Andy Taylor says the blaze that killed 6 year old Austin Smith and 4 year old Mindy Smith was likely caused by lit candles in the living room, which was directly adjacent to the children's bedroom.
The family did not have electricity at the time; it was planning to move out of state the next day.
Preliminary autopsy reports say Austin and Mindy died of smoke and soot inhalation.
A separate fire that burned at the same time at 733 N. Edwards St. is still under investigation.
