Need For Assistance Growing In Lee County

Keokuk, IA – It can be difficult for someone to ask for help in feeding their family. The economic climate in southeast Iowa, though, is forcing more people to do just that.

They are turning to the Keokuk Salvation Army for assistance.

Lee County's unemployment rate in August was 10.8%. It was the highest countywide rate in the state of Iowa.

In fact, Lee County's rate was nearly four percentage points higher than the statewide rate (6.8%).

Major Diana Amick with the Keokuk Salvation Army is seeing the results of Lee County's high unemployment rate first-hand.

Amick says more people are coming in to get help with utilities, transportation, and medicine. She says they are also seeking assistance in putting food on their tables.

Amick says the Keokuk Salvation Army offers assistance on a case-by-case basis. She says applicants must fill out some paperwork and provide a photo ID, proof of income, and proof of address.
