Public Broadcaster to Cut Hours

Springfield, IL – Some public TV viewers in the area might see less programming.

Network Knowledge, which runs WMEC in Macomb along with WQEC in Quincy and WSEC in Jacksonville-Springfield, plans to reduce its transmitter operation by more than 8 hours a week.

As a result, the station will sign on a bit later in the morning and sign off a little sooner at night on most days.

Most cable subscribers won't be impacted. But the change will be noticed by those who watch "over the air" with an antenna.

Dr. Jerold Gruebel, CEO and president, said the move will save an estimated $10,000 a year.

"We're hoping this is the last of several changes," said Gruebel. "We've done a lot of things to cut costs over the last two years during this recession. We're about as cost effective as we can get without changing programs."

The station has struggled with debt and a loss of grant funding in recent years.

Starting December 1, the sign-on will be at 6:30 am weekdays, while sign off will occur at 11:00pm Sunday through Friday.
