Peoria, IL – The man accused of making several threats against Western Illinois University will remain in federal custody until he stands trial.
18 year old Cameron McKoy appeared in U.S. District Court Monday morning for a detention hearing. Magistrate Judge John Gorman determined McKoy is a "threat to the community" and will remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals.
McKoy's defense attorney attempted to have him released to his mother, who the attorney said is a responsible third party caretaker.
Judge Gorman disagreed. He said the majority of the phoned-in threats were made from his mother's home.
The Grand Jury reconvenes December 6. It's unlikely McKoy will receive an indictment before then.
McKoy has been accused of making several bomb threats against Western Illinois University residence halls, but has so far only been charged with one. The FBI says he's likely responsible for the phoned in threats, but the agency is still investigating several handwritten notes found in Higgins Hall.
