Depot Restoration Needs Volunteers

Keokuk, IA – The former Keokuk Union Depot is in desperate need of repair.

Mark Smidt with the city's Riverfront Implementation Committee says there are several holes in the roof. He says water damage has also warped one interior wall.

Smidt says that's why the city ramped up efforts to acquire the property. The final price is $1 for the building and $1/year for the land beneath and around it.

Smidt says a grant has been secured to make emergency repairs to the property. He says once that takes place, the focus will shift towards restoration.

Smidt hopes that will become a community-wide effort. He says the goal is to create an oversight committee, similar to the panel operating the Grand Theatre.

Smidt says some possible uses for the former depot include a restaurant, a community room, or a museum.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the restoration effort can contact Mayor Tom Marion at City Hall (319-524-2050). Monetary donations will also be accepted there.

Smidt says more information and history about the depot and renovation plans can be found here and here
