Abingdon, IL – The Abingdon School district has begun the search for a new superintendent.
The school board "regretfully" accepted the resignation of Dr. Tami Roskamp at a special meeting Wednesday afternoon. This is her third year as Abingdon superintendent.
Roskamp will move to Beecher, Illinois -- about 40 miles due south of Chicago -- to take over as superintendent of its school district.
She reflected fondly of her time in Abingdon, but said it was time for a career advancement.
"I saw an opportunity, and I thought hey why don't I talk to Beecher," says Roskamp. "Sometimes if something catches your eye, you say hey I might want to talk to them because it sounds fascinating, and it did with [Beecher's] technology and professional development. I said hey there's an opportunity here that I would like to try."
Roskamp says she has family in the south suburbs of Chicago, which also factored into her decision.
The Illinois Association of School Boards will help the district in its search... Roskamp says the association will act as a search firm of sorts. She says it will conduct a nationwide search over the next eight to ten weeks, hopefully hiring someone by that time. That would allow for a transition period in May and June.
Roskamp's last day is slated for June 30.
