Macomb, IL – Voters are being asked to choose a new mayor, elect aldermen, and decide the fate of a referendum.
Voters throughout the city will consider at least three issues. Those are the races for mayor and alderman at large along with the referendum.
The ballot proposal asks voters to approve a half-cent increase in the sales tax. The city said the money is needed to help pay for road and bridge repairs. The city already collects a half-cent to pay for such work.
The race for mayor features (in the order they appear on the ballot) Fourth Ward Alderman Mike Inman, Second Ward Alderman Ed Lavin, and WIU student D'Angelo Taylor. The winner will succeed Mick Wisslead, who chose not to run again after serving two, four-year terms.
The contest for alderman at large includes (in ballot order) incumbent Don Wynn, Jim Von Kannon, Christopher Zimmerman, and Terri Van Meenen-Misfeldt.
In addition, voters in the third, fourth and fifth wards will choose their representative on the city council.
In the Third Ward, incumbent Lou Gilbert is being challenged by Aaron Fosdyck.
In the Fourth Ward, David Bosworth, Sean Dixon, and Thomas Koch are vying to replace Inman as the alderman.
In the Fifth Ward, incumbent Dave Dorsett is being challenged by Sue Tex.
No one is running for the seat being vacated by Lavin in the Second Ward.
Candidates must earn more than 50% of the vote in order to win. In contests in which no one receives more than 50%, the top two vote-getters will advance to a run-off contest in the April 5 municipal elections.
Polling places will be open from 6:00am to 7:00pm.
