Macomb, IL – Macomb will loan money to a pair of businesses on the Courthouse Square.
The forgivable loans are being made through the city's Downtown Facade Improvement Program.
Community Development Coordinator Ed Basch said a loan of $11,677 will help pay for half the cost of replacing of windows at 100 North Side Square.
"As part of the historic district requirements, the top of the windows will be elliptical and there will be grids in the windows," Basch told aldermen during the March 7 city council meeting.
"We have some photographs from about the turn of the century. It will look similar. It won't be a replica but it will be similar."
The building is owned by Marilyn Pruitt. She plans to replace windows on three sides of the building, plus do some painting and awning repair.
Aldermen also approved a loan of $15,000 for the building next door at 102 North Side Square. That building, which is owned by Otto Ullrich, is in need of some brick work.
$15,000 is the limit for a project in the facade program unless the city council authorizes a greater amount.
Basch said Ullrich acquired the property in January and he plans to bring in a business with two or three full-time employees.
Both projects were earlier endorsed by the city's Historic Preservation Commission. These are the first two downtown facade improvement applications.
