Lee County, IA
Lee County should not expect any help from the federal government after last month's record setting blizzard.
Lee County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Cirinna says Iowa did not sustain the roughly $4-million in damage needed to qualify for a presidential disaster declaration. He says just seven counties, including Lee County, received state declarations.
A federal declaration would have allowed local governments to be reimbursed for their blizzard preparations and responses.
Keokuk, IA
Keokuk is still open to the idea of replacing about 12 blocks of Grand Avenue.
Mayor Tom Marion says nothing can proceed, though, until the engineering work on a structure to run stormwater over the bluff at 9th Street and Grand Avenue is complete. That structure was not included in the original plans.
The Keokuk City Council has discussed delaying Grand Avenue to catch up on other street work.
Lee County, IA
Lee County is moving ahead with some road and bridge repairs.
The Board of Supervisors has agreed to replace the 212th Street bridge that spans Sugar Creek. The project is expected to cost about $515,000.
The county will spend another two million dollars to resurface part of Highway J-40 near the Van Buren County line.
Keokuk, IA
L-Treyns Bar and Grill in downtown Keokuk can keep serving alcohol.
The city council voted 6-1 to renew its liquor license.
Alderman Ron Payne opposed the renewal. He says the owner of the bar has not been willing to work with the city to address repeated noise complaints from outdoor concerts.
Several aldermen disagreed with Payne's comments, saying that denying the license would have probably closed another downtown business.
