Macomb, IL – Macomb hopes to complete some significant improvements to Chandler Park in time for Heritage Days at the end of June.

Public Works Director Walter Burnett said the electrical system in the park needs to be replaced. He said an upgrade has been needed for some quite time, and the issue has been talked about for some time. Now he hopes the work can be done within the next few months.

Burnett said the project will not disturb the brick sidewalks.

"Even though we'd like to ultimately upgrade those, at this point we'll stay away from them," Burnett said.

The cost of the electrical upgrade is not yet known because the project must go out to bid. Burnett said money for the improvements will come from the city's west side TIF fund. He said the project is in the city budget.

He hopes it can go out to bid early next month.

A public hearing on the city's plans will take place Thursday, March 24, 6:00pm in the City Hall Community Room.

Burnett said the city wants feedback from stakeholders before it proceeds with its plan.

"We've got a rough plan. We want to make sure that plan works for the groups that participate in Heritage Days, the Gazebo Arts Festival, the Al Sears Jazz Festival, Juneteenth, and all those sort of events," Burnett said.

Burnett said to the best of his knowledge, a major overhaul of Chandler Park's electrical system has never been done.
