Hancock County, IL – Hancock County residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, April 5.
One of the questions before them will be whether to approve a new economic development tax.
County Board Chairman David Walker says the tax will be assessed on county property ($0.03/$100 assessed valuation).
He says the tax should generate about $84,000 annually.
Walker says the money would be used to create an economic development organization.
The county would also like to develop a revolving loan fund. Walker says that could encourage entrepreneurs to set up shop in Hancock County.
He says the economic development organization would consist of six county board members and the mayors of the nine towns in Hancock County with populations over 500.
Walker expects the board to work with current economic developers in Hancock County and efforts in neighboring counties.
Walker says the public would be able to offer input to the organization. He anticipates the panel holding open meetings after the regular Hancock County Board meetings.
County Clerk Kerry Asbridge says the referendum requires a simple majority.
The polls in Hancock County will be open from 6:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 5.
