Keokuk Schools Project Tax Hike

Keokuk, IA – The Keokuk School Board has adopted the district's 2011-2012 certified budget.

The projected property tax rate is $19.35/$1,000 of assessed valuation.

That's a $0.74 increase compared to the current budget.

Superintendent Lora Wolff says $19.35 would be the maximum rate.

She says the rate would be reduced, though, if state lawmakers set allowable growth at 1%-2%.

"If they were to pass 1%, it would be nice," says Dr. Wolff, "if they pass 2%, we would not get any more money in Keokuk but our levy rate would fall by $0.60-$0.70."

Business Manager Greg Reynolds says if the current projections hold, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay an extra $70 in school property taxes next year.

The Keokuk School District will bring in $6.6-million from property taxes next year. That's a $400,000 increase compared to the current year.

Reynolds says enrollment continues to trend down. He says the district has lost close to 700 students over the last 25 years.

Dr. Wolff says the line-item portion of the budget this summer.
