Macomb, IL – The University Drive reconstruction project in Macomb will require some extra work, which will cost the city some extra money.
The asphalt along the curb line of the outside lanes has deteriorated more than the rest of the street.
"The recommendation is to mill down an extra four inches on each side the entire length of the project," said City Administrator Dean Torreson.
He said that would be filled with asphalt before being topped with two-and-a-quarter inches of the polymer based asphalt mix for the surface.
The added cost is $115,112.
Sixth Ward Alderman Tim Lobdell said proper repairs must be made now or the city will pay a bigger price down the road.
"(Without the repairs) we're going to be right back where we are, two to three years from now, with a road that we've sunk a million dollars into that's going to look essentially the same as it does today. And that's just not acceptable," Lobdell said.
Aldermen approved the change during a special city council meeting on May 31. That brings the total price tag for the University Drive reconstruction project to $1,070,700.
Mayor Mike Inman believes the final cost could rise a bit higher, though he does not anticipate any added expenses as large as the curb repairs.
