Keokuk Schools Delay Some Construction Bids

Keokuk, IA – Superintendent Lora Wolff says the Keokuk School Board reviewed bids for about a dozen projects at the high school during a special meeting earlier this week.

Dr. Wolff says the estimated price tag for all of the work was about $10-million.

She says the low bids ended up totaling more than $11-million.

Wolff says that is why the school board did not accept all of the bids as originally planned.

The panel approved roughly $7.5-million in areas such as window replacement and electrical upgrades.

Dr. Wolff says about $3-million worth of work will go back on the market.

"By repackaging (the work), the hope is that we will get more bids," says Dr. Wolff, "so obviously the cost would go down."

Wolff says the high bids came in areas such as concrete and demolition.

She says the new bids will be presented to the school board on later this month.

Bids for work at George Washington and Hawthorne Elementaries are also anticipated at that time.

The Keokuk School Board also accepted a bid for asbestos removal at the high school.

Dr. Wolff says the work at the high school should get underway in a couple of weeks and be completed by late 2012.
