Galesburg Transit Center Awaits State Money

Galesburg, IL – Galesburg's mayor is worried about whether and when state money will be available for construction of a new public transit garage.

State lawmakers left Springfield last week without agreeing on a funding plan for construction projects. Governor Pat Quinn has called them back to deal with the issue.

Mayor Sal Garza said the city is relying on state and federal money to pay for the bus garage.

"It's going to be $1.8 million. There will be no local funding that we will have to put in to that project," Garza said.

Hell be concerned as long as lawmakers continue to dicker over how the state will pay for such work.

"We don't want to get mid-stream and have the funding not be available," Garza said.

Garza said the city plans to demolish a building on Monmouth Boulevard near Henderson Street and replace it with the new facility. It will house the city's fixed-route buses as well as its hand-vans.

Garza hopes the bus center can open by autumn 2012.

Garza said the city has already acquired the property, and some engineering work has been completed. The city still needs to complete the final design stage before beginning construction once it's assured state money will be available.
