Burlington, IA – Several ground-breakings have taken place since construction of the Flint River Trail through Des Moines County began a few years ago.
The latest took place on July 1 for a portion of Burlington's phase of the work.
City Manager Doug Worden says the work will occur just north of the city.
"This will be primarily the stretch of trail that goes up to and runs along the north bottoms levee," says Worden, "and then it actually kinda branches north across Flint Creek and then it goes down off the levee and eventually tie into the trail that goes off of Pond Street."
Worden says the roughly $1-million phase of the project will get underway later this month.
He says Shipley Contracting should have the work completed this fall.
Worden says the scope of the work could be scaled back a bit.
He says Burlington has about $980,000 available but the bid came in about $1.03-million.
Worden says the contractor will pour 6" of concrete on the levee portion of the trail.
He says all that remains for Burlington is to connect the city's existing sidewalk along the riverfront to the current trail and to replace a rail bridge across Flint Creek.
Flint River Trail will eventually run from the Burlington Riverfront to Big Hollow Recreation Area.
