Keokuk, IA – Keokuk has surrounded 1028 Main Street with barricades and caution tape.
Code Enforcement Officer Kathie Mahoney says part of the two-story, brick building's roof has already caved in.
She says that is on top of extensive interior damage.
Mahoney says asbestos tests are being conducted. She says they will determine the final price tag for the demolition.
The city plans to seek emergency demolition bids on Friday.
Mayor Tom Marion says it looks as if the city will have to pick up the cost of the demolition.
He says that's because the current owner does not have the money needed to take the building down.
Keokuk sets aside money, each year, for unexpected demolitions, but with multiple properties in the works, that fund is already being strained.
Marion plans to ask the city council for permission to use the debris from 1028 Main Street to fill the giant hole at 528 Main Street.
He says that would save Keokuk money because the debris would not have to go to the landfill, avoiding tipping fees.
528 Main Street is where the former Green Tambourine building stood until it collapsed two years ago.
That building came crashing down at one time while 1028 Main Street is gradually falling so city employees have time to prepare.
