Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Department of Education has released the 2011 State Report Card for No Child Left Behind.
The document shows that a majority of the state's public schools are meeting participation and proficiency standards.
It also reveals, though, that more schools missed the goals for the 2010/2011 school year (37.4%) compared to the previous year (35.9%).
The number of districts to miss annual yearly progress standards increased slightly from 38 to 40.
The test scores are compiled for all students and for large sub-groups, such as special education, race, and ESL.
That means an entire student body can reach the standard, but a school could be in need of assistance if one subgroup does not qualify.
The goal of No Child Left Behind is for all students to meet grade-level standards in reading and mathematics by 2014.
There are penalties for continually missing AYP including funding cuts or school restructuring.
