The Tri States – A look back at the top stories and features from the Tri States Public Radio news department from September 2011.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture on September 7 declined to issue a permit for the proposed Shamrock Acres hog farm in McDonough County. The department instead asked for more information about several aspects of the large-scale operation.
Human error led to confusion over the results of the Keokuk School Board election, and veteran State Senator Gene Fraise (D-Ft Madison) announced last month that he would not run for election again.
On the first day of the month, Daniel Belknap was found guilty of killing five-year old Silven Yocum. It was Belknap's second trial in the case. He was also convicted the first time, though that verdict was overturned on a technicality.
The tri states and the nation marked the ten year anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks against America. 10 days later, on September 21, the International Day of Peace was celebrated. News Director Rich Egger and WIU Political Science Professor Julia Albarracin produced a memorable feature in observance of Peace Day.
Egger also told us about last month's Stearman Fly-in in Galesburg, and reporter Jason Parrott examined how the plan to close numerous rural post offices across America will hurt a small town in northeast Missouri.
