MACOMB, IL – Southeast Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack is pushing his bill that would require greater transparency from the deficit reduction super committee.
His fellow Democrat, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, said he supports transparency in government. but Congress can't pass the bill quickly enough to make a difference.
Durbin said, "They literally have one month to do this so the Congressional Budget Office can score it. So we are not likely to be able to pass legislation establishing new ethical standards and guidelines and impose it on this committee in any meaningful way in the next four or five weeks."
Durbin says the super committee would have to complete its work by November 1st to give the Congressional Budget Office time to look at the committee's numbers and to project the impact of the committee's recommendations.
