Keokuk, IA – Karole Smith was appointed to the Keokuk City Council in May of 2008.
She represents the 6th ward, which consists of the city's northwest side.
Smith says she is seeking re-election because she enjoys representing her ward and so she can continue to work on some key issues for the city.
She wants to push for more tourism within the city.
Smith says brining in out-of-town money will help local businesses during difficult economic times.
Her ideas include creating more bicycling opportunities and opening up various parts of town for historic tours.
Smith says she brings a unique perspective to the council. She cites her industrial background, her multiple degrees in organization and administration, and her role as the director of the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
Smith says one of her priorities would be to cut spending in the city's budget.
Her ideas include requiring employees to utilize direct deposit, holding paperless meetings, and encouraging cross-training between departments.
Smith says the city can put an end to the debate over alcohol on public property by creating a special events permit.
She says that way if an event meets a series of criteria, it can be held on any piece of city owned property, including Rand Park.
